The How & Why of Our Genealogy & Publishing Journey.

Sep 2016  update  The How & Why of Our Genealogy & Publishing Journey.

Due to a recent unfortunate incident in August, I thought it would be wise to clarify a couple of aspects of the How & Why of this journey we are on in Glengarry County Genealogy & Publishing.

1st - I have never claimed to be a Professional Genealogist. If a viewer of our work assumed that, that was their choice & mistake. This question probably has come up the odd time in the last 30 to 40 years, but not with the persistence of the present situation.

2nd - I have never claimed to be  part of any Certified Professional Genealogical Association. If a viewer of our work assumed that, that was their choice & mistake.

3rd -  My experience these 45 years came as a result of the Grace of God, openness, collecting and sorting family information, instinct, intuition, gut feeling, and a subtle knowingness as to who belonged to what families from collecting, reviewing obituaries, Gravestone inscriptions, church records, land records, etc.

4th - You never know where genealogy research is going to take you. With pre-conceived expectations the viewer can be in for a shock with what results can show up.

5th - Yes, I do research for people from time to time. I am under no obligation to accept research requests from anyone. Likewise, if I do, I am also at liberty to return any research deposit if I deem that necessary. In the above incident, I deemed it necessary to return the research deposit.  When I do research, then that person is paying for my time, not buying or purchasing the resulted documentation. Depending on the information I am presented with as a starting point, then depending on what results come about, the person who made the request will usually get some documents sent to them.    I do not manufacture the results. The results come from the research done.

6th - Any research results I end up with — They are as they are —- I stand behind those results,  until new factual documentation comes about to change things. I do not claim the results are right or wrong, good or bad. I leave that to the viewer to decide. The results are as they are. The viewer makes a choice as to whether they agree, accept or believe the results presented from their perspective to determine its validity.

7th — The WHY of this journey is, was to preserve the history, family history in particular of the Glengarry County Ontario and area and make it available to those so interested. Linking families as best we could & were possible documenting same. Much has been done, more still has to be done. In the results that now exist, we have done the best we could within the circumstances that had to be dealt with and still have to be dealt with.

8th -  Here are some examples of how easy it is when dealing with Macs, especially MacDonalds, MacDonells, to have the right names and the wrong people at the same time. This in most cases is unavoidable and happens to most if not all of us, myself included,  who do genealogy research at one time or another.  Mistakes, Red Flags, Discrepancies in Genealogy research. Solving this requires putting more detailed meat on the bones of the names concerned with dates, BMD etc.

These examples are based on the information I was aware of at the time, date of completion of article, even if new information came along after completion of any specific outline made.

Ex 1—   The Alexander MacDonell Dilemma.

Ex 2 —  The John MacDonald Dilemma  [Mistakes in Genealogy]

Ex 3 — Angus MacDonald & Janet MacDonald, right names, wrong people

Ex 4 —  The Alexander McNaughton Dilemma

To those who made the choice to support us over these past 45 years for books or research our sincere thanks. We hope the results were beneficial more that confusing.

take care and God Bless

Greetings
Gravestones of Glengarry Series

May you all have a save & enjoyable summer.

Although there has not been much action on my Glengarry County website as far as updates go, behind the scenes, there has been some steady activity.

1-- I have been for most of this year, bit by bit proofreading the Master Index of the Gravestones Glengarry Series of 14 volumes of over 43,000 entries. The index is under a 12 headings. Making corrections on glitches, typos and doing some more fine tuning. I am almost done. As a result each index for each volume had been fine tuned with typos and glitches corrected.  There will also be a location index made, on the names so listed if all goes well. Not all names have a location designation [ lot & concession, town, ] listed. A printed copy on an 8.5" x 11" back to back will be in the range of 850 pages at about a 80% ratio, and subject to finalization results. The end result will be in pdf format on a CD.

2-- The MacDonalds of Loup, Lundie & Fraser Connections work has also grown and has more than 33,000 entries and much documentation--- obits, BMD, gravestone inscriptions.

If this work was printed out, it would be just under 2,400 pages in a family history report without any formatting. Also there is included with this work, the FAMILY NOTES of over 3 gigs of background information, including more than 220 questionnaires completed to various degrees from members of The GGS. These were done in the 1980's.

To see a list of some the various family surnames that show up in this work check out  http://glengarrycounty.com/loupv4index.html  This includes 18 branches/groups of MacDonalds/MacDonells.

3-- Since last fall I have been dealing with a health challenge that zapped my energy.  I had a lot of tests at the local hospital, St Joseph's in Comox, BC which turned out pretty normal, nothing serious, my energy and stamina are coming back slowly & surely

4-- We are now in our 44th year of this journey which has resulted in over 32,000 pages of material being published in either book or CD form  check it out here  http://whatsnew-alexwfraser.blogspot.ca/2014/12/whats-new-update-glengarrycountycom.html

What's New Update.. GlengarryCounty.com

What's New Update.   GlengarryCounty.com

Alex W Fraser & our published titles
Been a while since I made an update, so here's catching up.

Rhoda Ross and our published titles
the above 2 photos of AlexW Fraser & Rhoda Ross standing next to a stack of books, about 200, represents the more than 30,000 pages we have published on Glengarry County and Area over the past 43 years. These 30,000 pages are the equivalent of about 200 single title books of 160 pages each.

The 15 volume Gravestones of Glengarry Series 1976 - 2014

Volume 3, Green valley - St. Raphaels  is the 3rd in the series volume and 10 years late [1988 ]  in getting published, due to my trying to earn a living so I could pay my bills and carry on this project in the hope of helping you solve your  family history. Macdonalds of Loup, Lundie & Fraser Connections

Version 5 progress
Version 5 will end up with over 31,000 entries and include a lot of Baptisms. Marriage and death records from the local Churches, mainly St Raphael's, St Finnan's Alexandria, St Mary's RC Church & St Andrew presbyterian/United Williamstown.  Version 4 index  http://glengarrycounty.com/loupv4index.html

This work includes MacDonald/MacDonell family references to the following groups
  1. MacDonalds of Loup
  2. Clan Ranald MacDonald
  3. King MacDonells UEL
  4. King MacDonalds from Nova Scotia
  5. Greenfield MacDonells
  6. Sandfield MacDonald
  7. Agent MacDonells
  8. Spanish John MacDonells - Miles MacDonell,

The Descendants of all of these early families in the Glengarry County area have become interrelated to some degree over the past 2 centuries. They are mixed up in more ways than one.

This work if printed out, for instance from Version 4
The MacDonald/MacDonell line would be 1418 pages including index with no formatting

One McMillan line would be 132 pages including index with no formatting
One McPherson line would be 62 pages including index with no formatting
One McRae line would be 69 pages including index with no formatting
One O'Connor line would be 19 pages including index with no formatting
One Poupore line would be 160 pages including index with no formatting
One Ross line would be 159 pages including index with no formatting
This list would over lap to some degree and totals over 3200 pages. Thus you can see why it is on a CD. The above number of pages does not include the files in the Family Notes Folder, which could add up to as many pages again or more.

Questionnaires -- There are more than 220 completed questionnaires  in pdf or jpg format included in family Notes Folder in the Questionnaire Folder, from members of the Glengarry Genealogical Society  which were done in the 1970's & 1980's amounting from 1 or 2 pages per member to over 12 completed questionnaires per member. The information from many of these completed questionnaires has been incorporated into the record/work done in the MacDonalds of Loup, Lundie & Fraser connections. There is still more to come
